NGX Storage - Microsoft offloaded data transfer (ODX)

Microsoft tarafından geliştirilen ODX (offloaded data transfer) teknolojisi veri transferi süreçlerinde sunucu üzerindeki yükleri alarak bu teknoloji ile uyumlu çalışan veri depolama sistemleri üzerine taşımaktadır. Özetle veri transferi işleminin sunucu yerine depolama ünitesine bırakılmasıdır. Pratikte bu işlemin nasıl gerçekleştiğini aşağıdaki diyagram üzerinden bakalım;

 

 

 

  1. Sunucu A, transfer etmek istediği veriye ait bilgileri içeren bir işaretçiyi (token) Sunucu B'ye gönderir.
  2. Sunucu B sözkonusu işaretçiye ait bilgileri ODX desteğine sahip olan veri depolama ünitesine iletir.
  3. Veri depolama ünitesi transfer edilecek veriyi herhangi bir network (ethernet, fibre channel veya sas) ortamı kullanmadan kendi içinde taşır.

Bu işlemler veri depolama ünitesi içerisinde gerçekleştiği için, sunucular üzerindeki işlemci yükü çarpıcı şekilde düşerken ağ kaynakları da kullanılmamış olur.

Özellikle Hyper-V kullanılan sanallaştırma ortamlarında VHD/VHDX oluşturulması ve Live Migration operasyonlarında ODX fark yaratmaktadır. NGX Storage, Microsoft ODX ile gelen ve Windows Server’ların veri transfer işini storage tarafında yapılmasını sağlayan POPULATE TOKEN - WRITE USING TOKEN, WRITE SAME ve UNMAP komutlarının tamamını desteklemektedir. Depolama ünitesi kullanılan sanallaştırma ortamlarında dosya kopyalama ve taşıma işlemleri varsayılan olarak sanal sunucu üzerinden gerçekleşir. Bu durum hem fiziksel sunucu hem de sanal sunucu için fazladan kaynak(CPU, Memory, IO) tüketimine sebep olmaktadır. Ayrıca aktarım sırasında kullanılan depolama trafiğine de ekstra yük getirmektedir . Örneğin, sanallaştırma ortamlarında snapshot ve clone alma süreçlerinde kopyalama trafiği fiziksel sunucuya (hypervisor) kadar gelip, tekrar depolama ünitesine geri dönmektedir. Bu durumda fiziksel sunucuda hesaplama ve ram bellek tüketimi artarken aynı zamanda da network / SAN trafiğinde çoğu zaman darboğaz oluşturabilecek bir ağ trafiği meydana gelebilmektedir. Bu esnada oluşan yük dalgalanmaları kritik hizmet seviyesinde servis sağlayan kurumlar için performans şikayetlerine ve sonuçta da müşteri memnuniyetsizliğine dönüşebilmektedir.

VAAI (vStorage APIs for Array Integration) VMware tarafından ESXi 4.1 sürümü ile gelen veri depolama ünitesi veya yazılımı geliştiren firmalar için geliştirilen bir API katmanıdır. VMware ESXi sunucuları kopyalama ve taşıma sırasında VAAI kullanılmayan durumlarda trafiği hypervisor sunucusu üzerinden geçirmektedir. Ancak bu durum maliyetleri arttırabilir ve olası hizmet duraksamalarını beraberinde getirebilir.

İnternet trafiğinin her geçen gün büyüdüğü ve mobil cihazların kullanım oranının hızla arttığı bir dönemdeyiz. Bu artışa bulut bilişim çözümleri şimdilik cevap vermiş gibi görünüyor. Bulut teknolojisi üreticileri ve son kullanıcıya hizmet veren büyük sağlayıcılar(Google, Microsoft, Amazon vb.) ağ ve depolama topolojilerini fiyat - performans avantajı ve kullanım kolaylığı sağlayabilecek kesintisiz sistemlere dönüştürüyor. Ancak bu büyüme scale-up mimarinin tersine bulut terminolojisine uygun olarak scale-out olarak gerçekleşmektedir.

Veri depolama dünyası, bulut bilişim ile yaygınlaşan scale-out mimarilerine ve sanallaştırma teknolojilerine uyum sağlamak amacı ile yeni teknolojiler üretmeye devam ediyor. Scale-out olarak büyüme gösteren mimarilerin temelinde ise klasik SAN topolojileri yerine ethernet tabanlı yeni nesil 100 GbE seviyelerine ulaşabilen teknolojiler ön plana çıkıyor.

Dünyanın önde gelen Infiniband ve Ethernet teknolojisi üreticisi Mellanox, son yıllarda depolama sektöründeki FC(FibreChannel) teknolojisinin getirdiği olağan maliyet ve trafik limitlerini Ethernet ile katlayan yeni teknolojiler geliştirmektedir. 2016 yılı sonu itibariyle Mellanox, 100 Gbps’lik portların üretimiyle birlikte diğer üreticilere göre gecikme süresi, maliyet avantajı ve performans kriterleriyle liderliğini koruyor. NGX Storage teknoloji ortaklarından olan Mellanox ile gerçekleştirdiğimiz çalışmalar sonucunda kontroller başına 420Gbit hızında veri iletişimi sağlayabilmekteyiz. Klasik SAN topolojilerinde, sunucu ve veri depolama üniteleri arasındaki iletişim, maksimum 8Gbps veya 16Gbps erişim hızlarına sahip portlar üzerinden gerçekleştirilebilmektedir. SAN tabanlı bir veri depolama çözümü arayışında olan kurumlar, ethernet tabanlı çözümlere göre daha maliyetli olan SAN Switch, FC HBA ve kablolama yatırımlarını da beraberinde yapmak zorunda kalmaktadır. Bununla birlikte klasik SAN topolojisinde yatırımın korunamaması riski potansiyel maliyet artışlarına sebep olabilmektedir. Bu duruma neden olan başlıca giderler storage üzerinde yer alan FC HBA kartlarının ve SAN anahtarlama cihazlarının port bazlı lisans maliyetleri ve FC topolojisinin yönetimsel yüküdür.

Günümüzde SAN mimarisi 4,8,16(yakın zamanda 32) GbE seviyelerinde iken, NGX Storage ve Mellanox çözümleri ile 10,25,40,50,56,100 GbE hızlarında Ethernet tabanlı depolama ağı kurgulayabilmek mümkündür.

Yukarıdaki grafikte, 2009-2017 yılları arasında FC ve TCP teknolojilerinin gelişimi görülmektedir. FC teknolojisi 8,16,32 GbE ile katlanırken, TCP teknolojisi 10, 40, 100, 200 GbE ile katlanmaktadır.
